“Creating New Horizons for Children with Systemic Constellation Focusing"
Category: Workshop
Language: English
Abstract: How can (grand)parents help their (grand)children to live their lives forwards, instead of the past weighing the child down or holding the child back? What helps children to be who they are and to grow from their own place their own life and be supported by their family system instead of being withheld by the family system? What helps children to sense and express their inner world and have healthy relations?
In this workshop we work with Family Constellations (founder Bert Hellinger) and Focusing (Gendlin). We will experience how a family constellation brings to light the hidden dynamics and entanglements in the family system and its impact on the child. The next step is to unfold in a focusing way the entanglements by exploring and following the bodily felt senses and awareness, so the family order can be restored and aligned. Everyone moves to its own rightful place and its own live forward solution and direction. That brings healing, harmony and empowerment in each generation and healthy vitality for the children and next generation.
A family constellation is set up when members of a group are asked to represent members of a family and are placed intuitively in the room (by the client). It is their interrelation and presence in the Knowing Field of the family of the client that we meet the phenomenon that the representatives have access to the bodily felt senses, words, feelings, movements and other information emerging from inside and leading to a next step and carrying live forwards.
Everyone taking part in Family Constellation Focusing workshops is amazed and deeply touched by what is unfolding before them as well by the intense experience when asked to represent a complete stranger. Or to see and hear the impact in a family and effect on the children! We create new horizons for ourselves, our children and the next generation!

Ria van Hage: After living and working in Cameroun and Kenya for 7 years and working internationally in a Dutch multinational for 17 years, I was educated as a psycho-social person-centered counselor, coach and trainer and started my own practice in 2000. I have myself specialized as Focusing Trainer, Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) Master Coach, Systemic Constellation Work, Trauma Work (a.o. Somatic Experience), Carl Jung’s individuation process & depth psychology, and the classic wisdom traditions Enneagram and Yjing. Since 2014 I am a TIFI Focusing Coordinator in Training and started a Focusing education and empowerment program at Rusinga Island in West-Kenya in Africa. www.I-Focus-School.nl |
The experience of the workshop facilitated by Ria van Hage.
(with permission of the client)
The question from the client was about: Belonging – Connecting – Rejection
Before the workshop we, the client and I as the facilitator, made a genogram of her family system and listed all the important happenings (facts) in the lives of the client, her parents and her grandparents.
Then in the workshop we sat together, took a little time to ground ourselves and make contact. We talked about her question with only a few words, just to invite the felt sense about the whole of the issue to come up and to be bodily felt by the client. I asked her where and how it felt in the body now and to be with it in a friendly way.
All participants of the workshop connected to themselves and to the session.
In this way we all tuned in to the shared and knowing field of the system around the issue/question of the client.
Noticing: The constellation and its dynamics.
I requested the client to ask someone to represent herself, someone to represent her father and someone to represent her mother. And to give them intuitively a place in the room by following her hands, because the hands –the body- knows where to place the persons in the room. When they are placed they just wait and then the energy of the ones they represent comes up and can be bodily felt by them. So then I ask each of them what is going on inside of them, to notice their bodily awareness and where they are looking at. They describe their feelings, physical sensations, and where they are looking at. I mirror all their words, so all what they say is acknowledged and new things might come up. This is how the dynamic of the system regarding the question is shown: where the energy is going and where the connection is and where it is restricted or entangled.
In the above first stage of the constellation we see the restricted dynamic in the family system, by which something in the client feels rejected, something feels not connected and there is the wanting for belonging.
We see that:
Nurturing: The constellation finding its natural order…
How are we moving forward: we work with the phenomenon of the constellation, we follow the process from there.

In the above first stage of the constellation we see the restricted dynamic in the family system, by which something in the client feels rejected, something feels not connected and there is the wanting for belonging.
We see that:
- the daughter (client) is looking to her parents, with all her feelings, noticing that her parents are not looking at her.
- the father is looking away, something far away is holding his attention (and energy), so he is not connected with his wife and daughter.
- the mother is with herself and not connected with her husband and daughter.
Nurturing: The constellation finding its natural order…
How are we moving forward: we work with the phenomenon of the constellation, we follow the process from there.
- I ask a participant to stand on the place where the father is looking at and to be there waiting for what felt sense comes up. The father is slowly connecting with the stand-in, then it feels good for him to have the stand-in come closer and be behind him looking over his shoulder.
The father notices that he can turn more towards his wife and then to his daughter. - I ask a participant to be stand-in for someone the mother needs and to be behind her. First it is too close, so the mother indicates a better distance, so she can make slowly contact to this energy (person) which she then feels is belonging to her. Then she can slowly make some contact with her husband and daughter.
- Now the daughter looks at both parents and sees that they are looking at her and there is a little bit of contact. She watches the person behind her father and notice that he is not looking friendly to her… on a deeper level there is this sentence resonating ‘please look friendly at me’…
Then she sees her father looking at her, which feels better now. And she also sees her mother looking at her, which feels better now. - Now the client comes into the constellation and takes in (by looking in the eyes of her representative) the whole of the process of the constellation and the last feeling and image, so it can further be processed.

Category: Workshop
Language: English
Abstract: Are you able to step into a child's unknown world . . . and let whatever emerges guide the next steps you take together ? We'll practice attuning to, and empathizing with, a child's story and deeper needs using art materials and experiential process to connect with and express: our playfulness, creativity and inventiveness.
My experience informs my understanding that the body carries all the important information and answers for us. It’s all in there and can remain not connected yet. So when I work with children of all ages, or clients, I stay connected with my own FS: building up safety, clear boundaries and interest in whatever is there inside the child/ the client and reflecting many new and unexpected feelings, movements or non-verbal language, shown from the child’s behavior and posture. The more that I can be with this subtle step by step process, the more a child can build up their own inner and outer connections. I never know the next step. My basic attitude is always to step gently and consciously into this unknown and unexpected territory. This brings always a fresh experience, subtlety and joy to every connection with children and with adults.
Topic that will be covered:
*why Focusing Works. *Listening in three directions. *Working with Emerging Body language. *Using your own FS (Felt Sense)

"Greating SAFETY"
Category: Workshop
Language: English
Abstract:
We all know that “feeling safe” is essential for nurturing a Focusing oriented change process.
Beside offering different techniques like safe color on a piece of paper, connecting with your favorite toy or your power animal, visualizing and painting a safe room etc. I also use the real room for finding a safe place/space in the room.
Offering safety rules and boundaries can help also creating safety.
But around safety there are more issues to consider: If you like to create safety, you also invite the un-safety threw the backdoor. What to do if the child can’t find SAFETY? What to do when we are/life in an unsafe or violent environment? What do I need as a companion for me feeling safe? Can I transfer my safety feeling towards the child or parent or caretaker? Can I influence my own body or the body of the child towards safety – and is this useful?
In this workshop I want to show an approach how to encourage and stimulate SAFETY by finding the right place in the room and creating safety in your body with the help of research based Embodiment techniques and Alba Emoting™.I would also like to encourage an exchange about our experiences around SAFETY.

Heidrun Essler: I am an academic speech trainer and therapist and Focusing coordinator for adults and children. This has led me to many areas of crises in the world where the lack of safety is a big issue. Dealing with it I have been confronted with difficult emotions over and over again. I have experienced how hard it can be to use words to express bodily feelings. So I use “listening and speaking with all body senses” and helping the body to “step-out” of unbearable pain and relax again – because this is what it wants to do. My professional experiences are giving trainings since 1989 in all kind of companies and organizations. I am a lecturer at the University of Karlsruhe for body language. I also work as consultant and coach on a one-to-one base. I have developed methods to teach Focusing to whole systems like kindergarten, schools, homes, camps or hospitals. |

“Cultivating Compassion for Our Inner Children”
Category: Workshop
Language: English
Abstract:
At the Heart of Focusing lies Compassion. Compassion for our inner little ones, compassion for our fellow life travelers, compassion for the life we are. In this focusing conversation/workshop we will explore the definition and nature of compassion and self-compassion and discuss the research that supports the importance for the individual and for society to treat ourselves compassionately. We will also practice experiential exercises that are drawn from a combination of Focusing, Spirituality, Positive Psychology, and Non-Violent Communication, and are designed to cultivate Self-Compassion. Even though these exercises are designed for adults they can be easily adjusted to also be used with children.

"KOL-BE : A Transformative Human Image for Focusing and Healing"
Category: Workshop
Language: English
Abstract:
KOL-BE is a non gender human image that acts as a projective mirror to our rich inner life represented by felt senses of difficult and positive experiences. It is a simple yet powerful tool that facilitates a safe and friendly interaction between the focuser and his non verbal body senses. The implicit and the unknown becomes clear and explicit visual process within a short time using qualities of objects and colors to represent the felt senses on KOL-BE. The focuser experiences new steps and movements while he is still in process. He finds the right distance to contain flooding emotions and develops self empathy and compassion. The workshop is experiential and participants will learn to facilitate a process using a KOL-BE manual. Different therapeutic cases will be introduced.

Category: Workshop
Language: English
Abstract:
Self Boundary Awareness is a model (Dr Nick Blaser) which helps us better understand interpersonal interaction. In this workshop we will experience to symbolize the Self-Boundary- Awareness. From the Felt Sense we know very specific how the architecture of the Self-Boundary looks like. Have you ever heard yourself say: “She went much too far this time”;” I should have stopped more early”; “I went too far, I can’t take any more of this”. Expressions referring a knowing of a Self-Boundary The Self-Boundary is developed in interaction with our environment. What happens with the Self-Boundary if adults don’t respect the boundary of the child? How can we help them build a healthy Self-Boundary? In the workshop we will seek answers to these questions.

“Collage-Making with Mothers”
Category: Workshop
Language: English
Abstract:
In Experiential Collage Work (ECW), the collage maker themselves explores the meaning of their own collage. What the collage maker finds does not come only from exploring their own collage, but also from the process of making collage. Their implicit experiencing is carried forward step by step. They can create new meaning from their own collage.
I have done ECW with a few mothers about seventeen years. I had an interview to mothers about experience of making the collage, and creating the meaning from it to study the changing process in the collage work. I found that mothers have experienced that accepting themselves, identifying their own lives, understanding and supporting each other, recognizing that their lives are a continuing process, and relaxing.
In this workshop, I will talk about ECW, and introduce the interview of mothers. And then you will make collages and work on ECW.

“How Focusing attitudes can be used for:
how to listen so children would talk
& how to talk so children would listen”
how to listen so children would talk
& how to talk so children would listen”
Category: Mini Workshop
Language: English
Abstract:
Do you get tired sometimes of repeating things to children countless times? Do you sometimes get tense in giving orders to children in such a way that it spoils the atmosphere and has little effect? I assume it’s the same in different countries, cultures and languages. Daily and ordinary interaction experiences lead to structure bound characteristics, shape views of life and behavioral strategies.
Focusing attitudes offers unpretentious communication that would loosen up annoying kinds of everyday interaction between adults and children of any age.
Focusing attitudes support and guide a natural process in every child for learning and growing within a social context.
Focusing attitudes fit unobtrusively into conversations, mainly those which concern needs, wishes, expressions of unlovely feelings, reactions of refusal and disobedience.
In this workshop we will work with examples from the participants and exercises suitable to demonstrate how Focusing attitudes could be put into practice.

Category: Mini Workshop
Language: English/Greek
Abstract:
TThis workshop is about pleasure and disguise. One of the favorite games of young children is dressing up as superheroes, witches, characters from fairy tales and movies, or even babies and mothers. By disguising we can ‘act out’ parts of ourselves, our wishes, our dreams, our fears. We can be bad or good, happy or sad, strong or weak. This workshop is an invitation to experience playfully the magic of disguise in a focusing way.

Abstract:
In this presentation I will refer to my experience of applying Focusing, NVC (Non-violent Communication) and especially Thinking At the Edge (TAE), in the last decade, in a public Greek school (Junior high school), where I work as a teacher of Physics (and Natural Sciences). I will refer to a general outline of my actions and activities (e.g. in the ‘Open Discovery Space’ European Program, http://opendiscoveryspace.eu/ and http://portal.opendiscoveryspace.eu/ and elsewhere), as to why I think that this was the best thing I have ever done as a teacher so far. I will also refer to the challenges and/or difficulties encountered with regard to the overall institutional-organizational framework of education in Greece, and to those challenges/difficulties of the students themselves and their usual or conventional attitude toward knowledge and 'feeling/sensing for themselves'.
